South Street (when UCLA students don't feel like waiting at In N Out)

1010 Broxton Ave.
Westwood Village, CA 90024

Mon-Sun 11AM-10PM

South Street is arguably one of the best cheese steaks in LA. There aren't many places worth choosing from but this one is definitely one of the ones that's in a class by itself. In a very unassuming spot located right by the LA premiere spot of The Village Theatre (formerly The Fox) and The Bruin theatres.

The shop actually kind of does remind me of the shops I would actually get philly cheese steaks from when I was a kid on the East coast. Fast and friendly little shop with checkered floors. Though the one shown below was not completely packed, normally they're practically brimming with meat. There's lot of different types of fixins to pile on top, such as different types of peppers and such, but I usually keep mine au natural except for maybe a little tobasco to kick up the heat ever so slightly. The fries are quite yummy. They taste more like potatoes and less like grease which is always refreshing. People I know who used to live in Philly have said this is the only place in LA that has real deal Philadelphia Cheese Steaks and I actually believe them.

A word to the wise. If you go to school at UCLA you are aware of how quickly they ticket people. Do the right thing and park at the 2 HOURS FREE parking structure right next door until 6pm. After 6pm it's a flat rate of $3.

Tonight I catch Arcade Fire at the Greek and will be guest corresponding on Rock Insider. Drop a line if you like what I write here, there or anywhere.

Free Drink Refills: Yes
Entree Price Range: about $8 for the combo or so. Okay don't quote me on this but I hear that if you tell them "The Den" you get 10% off. Let me know if it works.

i've never actually been to this place, but the fact that it's been there for so long has got to be a testament to their doing something right! that space seemed cursed for a long time.

haha I know exactly what you mean. The spot was cursed for a loooong time prior to them moving in. I go back every once in awhile and just see if the curse has caught them as well but it's still standing. Glad about it as well cause it's so hard to find a decent cheesesteak.
